3 Simple Rules For Finding Your Ideal MMA Academy
MMA Training In Kingston, Ontario
Since the UFC, mixed martial arts has become extremely popular, the challenge for beginners has been finding the best MMA school to help them achieve their goals.. This is because anyone, every Tom, Dick, or Harry with ANY martial arts experience can put out a shingle saying, “We teach mixed martial arts”, but few really practice the sport. Few actually have any mixed martial arts or brazilian jiu jitsu experience. To learn how to separate the real deal from the rest of the pack, you need to know a few things. But that’s more difficult when you are just starting out.

This post was written by Daryl Urbanski from Kingston, Ontario. I have 3 simple rules for finding your ideal MMA Academy. If you live in Kingston, Ontario (or anywhere else) and are looking for mixed martial arts instruction, here are the most important keys:
1. Know what you need out of MMA training
2. Know what the instructor says he can deliver
3. Know what the end result of training at that Academy REALLY is, versus what is said
Simple enough? Okay, now down to brass tacks. There are 3 top reasons that anyone would want to train in mixed martial arts.
2) The second benefit of learning mixed martial arts is Self-defense.
3)The final reason one would want training under a qualified mixed martial arts teacher is to compete in the cage.
Be Clear On Why Training MMA Is Important To You
No matter which of these three reasons is most important to you, it’s important to KNOW how those reasons rank in your own mind before searching. You are more likely to hit the target you AIM for; therefore it’s most important to know what questions to ask an MMA instructor before you settle on a school.
If Fitness and Fun are your MAIN reasons, then the best way to determine if that’s available is to visit the MMA academy in question. Watch a class for your age and experience level and see if the participants are getting what you hope to get out of the program. You won’t know until you watch if that club is a ‘hardcore’ mma or mixed martial arts club, or if its too soft for your liking.
If your interest in mixed martial arts training is self-defense, look for schools who don’t just teach how to fight MMA “by the rules”, but is focused on what works in the street. You might inquire as to your instructor’s background with law enforcement, military, and recognized self-defense organizations. Ask where their style of MMA comes from.
If you want to compete, ask if your instructor has produced winners you can read about in mixed martial arts sites or publications. If you want to be a competitor, you will want to know if the mma studio can actually train you to win in the cage.
“In Kingston, Ontario I have seen many, many mma schools come and go. As far as I know, the only resource for teaching actual mixed martial arts (meaning a school that combines striking, takedowns, and submissions as part of an integrated whole) is Martial Arts aXis. At the time of this writing, Martial Arts aXis is the only center located in Kingston with a cage and an instructor who is actuallywell trained in Gracie Jiu Jitsu (the family who DOMINATED Mixed Martial Arts for over 19 years!). 19 YEARS!”
So we’ve talked about being sure of what you want out of mixed martial arts training. We discussed how to make sure that the MMA academy you’re looking at can actually deliver those benefits. This brings us to the final point: knowing what the end result of training at that academy REALLY is, versus what they told you.
There are a few ways to determine this. One is to visit the mixed martial arts school in question and ask to talk with the intermediate level Members. Here’s why I say intermediate Members: beginners are always enthusiastic… and they don’t know any better. They will sing the praises of the school until they get beat in a competition and wonder why. The more advanced Students may actually be transplants from other academies. But the largest base of Students in any good mixed martial arts program are those that have been around long enough to give you the straight deal. They’ll tell you if they’re getting the benefits they signed up for, and if you can expect to get the same.
Another way to find out if you’ll get the fitness, fun, self-defense, and/or sports competition benefits out of a mixed martial arts program is to actually train there. Unfortunately, many studios… ESPECIALLY ones that don’t actually practice actual MMA… will try to get you to sign a contract obligating you to months or years of training before you get the insight that can only come from really attending there. It’s a bit of a catch-22, but most schools have a free class they offer before they try to recruit you.
A final hint: if you live in Kingston, Ontario or ANY place where mixed martial arts classes are offered… look for a school that offers a lengthy (two weeks or better) free trial or a money-back guarantee. These are the guys that are most confident in their product and less concerned about getting you to sign some contract, just to get your money before you find out their service isn’t all that you hoped it would be.
I hope you find the best MMA school to meet your particular needs. Feel free to write with questions or post comments below.
